Threave House Ghost Hunt
Presented by Mostly Ghostly in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland
About the event
The Ghost Hunt is Afoot!
An interactive, investigation-led evening inside one of Scotland’s most atmospheric heritage homes — where every room holds a story...
Join Mostly Ghostly this September for a rare chance to explore Threave House after hours, as we return for our second public paranormal investigation within this striking 19th-century mansion.
Built in 1872 for Liverpool merchant William Gordon, Threave House is an impressive example of Scottish Baronial architecture, set within the historic grounds of the National Trust for Scotland’s Threave Estate. Over time, curious tales have emerged — objects mysteriously falling from tables, shadowy outlines glimpsed in the night, and the sound of footsteps on the main staircase when no one is there. Crockery has clinked in empty rooms, and some staff have described a distinct feeling of being watched...
Over the course of the evening, guests will take part in a series of small-group sessions using traditional ghost-hunting techniques — including dowsing rods, pendulums, mirror work, trigger objects, and basic audio recording. Each session is supported by local history and legend, encouraging participants to observe, explore, and discuss findings together.
You’ll also:
- Visit evocative interior spaces, including turret rooms, the Billiard Room, and areas linked to previous unexplained encounters
- Venture into the garden after dark — taking time to listen, observe, and absorb the subtle changes that come with nightfall on the estate
- Engage with the shifting character of the house as the evening unfolds — from its grand public rooms to its more secluded, unsettling corners
There will be time for light refreshments and a closing group vigil in one of the house’s most resonant spaces.
With limited places available, this is a distinctive opportunity to experience Threave House in a different light — not just to explore it, but to engage with its atmosphere and history in a small-group setting.
Mostly Ghostly — creators of award-winning ghost and local history events across Dumfries and Galloway since 2008, and experienced paranormal investigators with a passion for uncovering Scotland’s hidden histories and unexplained tales.
A good old-fashioned ghost hunt — in every sense.
