The Ghost Hunt is Afoot!
An interactive, investigation-led evening inside Scotland’s oldest working theatre — spanning centuries of performance, players, and unexplained activity.
Join Mostly Ghostly for a rare opportunity to explore the Theatre Royal, Dumfries after hours — a building at the heart of the town’s cultural life since 1792, long associated with a range of curious and unexplained experiences.
Over the years, staff, performers, and visitors alike have reported a range of unusual occurrences within the theatre. Footsteps have been heard moving across empty spaces, doors opening and closing without explanation, and objects found displaced. During previous investigations and Haunted Theatre Tours, guests have described distinct sensations of presence in the auditorium and backstage areas, along with unexplained sounds from the upper levels and dressing rooms.
The theatre’s long history — from Georgian performances to modern productions — has left a lasting impression beyond its performances. Many believe that echoes of past performances, personalities, and moments of high drama continue to linger within its walls, particularly once the building falls quiet.
Over the course of the evening, guests will take part in a series of small-group sessions using traditional ghost-hunting techniques — including dowsing rods, pendulums, mirror work, trigger objects, and basic audio recording — all grounded in researched historical context and local accounts, encouraging observation, interpretation, and shared discussion.
You’ll also:
Explore the auditorium, stage, backstage areas, and dressing rooms after hours
Hear accounts gathered from previous investigations and theatre staff
Work in small groups across different areas of the theatre
Share observations, impressions, and questions as the evening unfolds
There will be breaks for refreshments, time to reflect and compare observations, and a closing group vigil within one of the theatre’s most atmospheric spaces.
