Shambellie House Ghost Hunt

About the event
The Ghost Hunt is Afoot!
An interactive, investigation-led evening inside one of Dumfries and Galloway’s most atmospheric historic houses — where every room holds a story.
Join Mostly Ghostly for a historic for a rare chance to explore Shambellie House after hours, as we return for our second public paranormal investigation in this remarkable building.
Built in the 1850s for the Stewart family, Shambellie House is a striking Scottish Baronial mansion set among woodland just outside New Abbey. Later becoming Scotland’s National Museum of Costume, its rooms were arranged to recreate scenes from the past — a setting that takes on a very different character once night falls.
Like many grand houses of its kind, Shambellie has gradually gathered its share of stories and curious experiences over the years. Visitors have spoken of unsettling feelings of presence in the quieter rooms, while local folklore tells of a mysterious “Grey Lady” reportedly glimpsed emerging from woodland near the driveway.
Even earlier descriptions of life at Shambellie remarked on its turreted, gothic atmosphere — a place where talk of ghosts was sometimes simply taken for granted. One former resident later recalled how the upper floors would produce unexplained creaks, bumps, and even a curious slithering sound that he was never able to identify.
Over the course of the evening, guests will take part in a series of small-group sessions using traditional ghost-hunting techniques — including dowsing rods, pendulums, mirror work, trigger objects, and basic audio recording.
Each session is supported by carefully researched historical context and local folklore, encouraging observation, interpretation, and shared discussion.
You’ll also:
• Explore the historic rooms of Shambellie House after dark• Hear the stories, legends, and curious reports connected with the house and its surroundings• Take part in collaborative investigation sessions throughout the building• Share observations, impressions, and questions as the evening unfolds.
There will be breaks for refreshments, time to reflect and compare insights, and a closing group vigil in one of the house’s most atmospheric spaces.
