About the event

Within the evocative setting of Broughton House, award-winning storyteller and Mostly Ghostly founder Kathleen Cronie shares the remarkable story of Jean Maxwell — remembered in local history as the Galloway Sorceress.

Through live storytelling drawn from contemporary accounts and surviving records, the evening brings together the unusual events that led to Maxwell’s trial in Kirkcudbright in 1805 — notably not for practising witchcraft, but for claiming to possess such powers. As one of the later Scottish cases connected to accusations of sorcery, it offers a revealing glimpse into a time when belief and suspicion could still influence reputations and futures.

Focusing on the people involved, the atmosphere of the era and the consequences that followed, this experience presents a compelling and lesser-known chapter of Galloway’s past through the power of spoken story, inviting audiences to reflect on the time and place in which it occurred.
