Broughton House Ghost Hunt
About the event
Presented by Mostly Ghostly in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland
The Ghost Hunt is Afoot!
An interactive, investigation-led evening inside one of Scotland’s most atmospheric heritage homes — where every room holds a story...
This Summer Solstice Weekend, join Mostly Ghostly for a rare chance to explore Broughton House after hours — returning for our second public paranormal investigation in this remarkable building.
Once home to artist and collector E.A. Hornel, Broughton House is layered with character, history, and its fair share of unexplained encounters over the years. Staff have quietly reported footsteps where none should be, subtle movements, and — more recently — a shutter found open, despite being securely closed.
Over the course of the evening, guests will take part in a series of small-group sessions using traditional ghost-hunting techniques — including dowsing rods, pendulums, mirror work, trigger objects, and basic audio recording. Each session is supported by carefully researched historical context and local folklore, encouraging observation, interpretation, and collaborative discussion.
You’ll also:
Visit rooms linked to past accounts of unusual activity
View a shawl from the National Trust for Scotland’s collection — connected to the 1862 case of Mary Timney, one of Dumfriesshire’s most chilling and tragic stories
Take part in a short outdoor session in the garden, guided by the atmosphere of the Solstice night
Share findings, impressions, and questions as the evening unfolds
There will be breaks for refreshments, time to reflect and compare insights, and a closing group vigil in one of the house’s most resonant spaces.
With limited places available, this is a rare chance to experience Broughton House after hours — not just to explore it, but to engage with its stories in a small-group setting.
Mostly Ghostly — creators of award-winning ghost and local history events across Dumfries and Galloway since 2008, and experienced paranormal investigators with a passion for uncovering Scotland’s hidden histories and unexplained tales.
A good old-fashioned ghost hunt, in every sense.
